Sarah Fisher Ames Abraham Lincoln Civil War Era Archive SOLD $37,800


This important archive centers on Mrs. Sarah Fisher Ames (1817-1901), an American sculptress and Civil War nurse who was a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln. The collection includes documents, letters, and photos spanning from 1862 to 1887. Highlights include a series of 1862 letters from Surgeon General William Hammond and Joseph R. Snell assigning Mrs. Ames to duty at Stanton Hospital, and a 1863 letter from Hammond permitting her to assist at Gettysburg, per Lincoln’s request. Most notably, the archive contains an ALS from Abraham Lincoln, dated January 5, 1865, in which he endorses Mrs. Ames for her dedication to nursing wounded soldiers. There are also numerous letters regarding Mrs. Ames' renowned bust of Lincoln, with correspondence from prominent figures such as William Seward, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and John Greenleaf Whittier. The collection features signed photos of Whittier and Oliver Wendell Holmes, including some of their poetry, as well as various family photos and portraits of Mrs. Ames, further documenting her personal and professional legacy.
