Outstanding 19th c. folk art overmantle painting of West Milton, Vermont 38" x 52" oil on canvas, canvas marked "Philadelphia Seamless" on reverse. Painted in a naïve itinerant artist style reminiscent of traveling New England painters Rufus Porter and Ammi Phillips , found in the attic of an early West Milton homestead depicted within the scene. The canvas mark dates the painting to around 1860. Rufus Porter (MA, CT, VT, NH, ME,- 1792-1884) Born in West Boxford, Massachusetts to a farm family, itinerant painter Rufus Porter has been described by folk-art historian Jean Lipman as America's "chief early mural painter and one of our outstanding native artists. . . .a mobile one-man factory for original portraiture and interior decoration" His landscape murals earned him wide attention, he completed more than 150 murals, a combination of freehand and stencils. Placed over mantles and entire walls, his murals were especially appreciated because he did natural settings of local views instead of the traditional elaborate classical or historical scenes with enhanced decoration.Exhibited Bennington Museum ca. 1995, Shelburne Museum ca. 1996.
